Moving to Sheffield as a student

Moving to Sheffield as a student

Students | Tips for Students | 04/05/17

Sheffield is a Northern city with its heart in steel production, but in the 21st century there’s a lot more to it than that. Students coming to study in Sheffield at the University of Sheffield or Sheffield Hallam University all have a great time getting to know the city and all it has to offer. The two universities have a combined student population of over 60,000. As England’s 4th largest city, Sheffield is a great choice for students who want all the benefits of living in a big city which is cheaper and safer than many other UK cities.

Sheffield – the perfect student city?

Named as the UK’s first National City of Sport – as home to Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, the World Snooker Championships and Olympic standard venues, it’s no surprise. There’s even a dedicated site to sport in Sheffield to find out how to get involved. It’s also great for lovers of the outdoors, with over 50 public parks and gardens, and is a mere 20 minute bus ride to the Peak District. Fun fact – it has the highest ‘tree to person ratio’ in Europe! Sheffield also has a great selection of music venues and festivals, including Tramlines and Peace in the Park. As the hometown of icons such as Arctic Monkeys and Pulp, Sheffield is a great spot for music aficionados It’s also suitable for theatre fans, with the Crucible, Studio and Lyceum in Tudor Square offering a superb repertoire. Sheffield City Hall is an iconic venue welcoming both theatrical and musical acts. Sheffield also delivers on the pub, bar and nightclub front, as well as a whole variety of shopping, restaurants and cafes to occupy students day and night!

Save money in Sheffield

One of the best things about Sheffield is the variety of independent shops, restaurants, cafés and attractions on offer. This means that you can benefit from a more unique experience, often at half the price of branded chains. London Road has a treasure trove of cuisines from around the world – take a stroll along the shopfronts to see what takes your fancy! The uber cool drinking and dining spot Bungalows and Bears offers two for one burgers on Tuesdays, alongside a seriously edgy vibe. You can also benefit from Sheffield’s selection of parks, gardens and outdoor spaces for a stroll, jog, or a picnic for those less actively inclined. A quick trip to the Peaks for a spot of blustery English air can do you no harm after a long library stint! The Showroom cinema is the biggest independent cinema in Europe, so may be worth checking out if you’re not a fan of blockbusters. Graves Park Animal Farm is a fun and free attraction – get up close and personal with some of the country’s rarest farm animals to forget about deadlines and exams.

What type of accommodation should I choose?

Many students will choose student housing in their first year at university, but there are lots of other options out there. To get the most out of your time as a student in Sheffield, it’s vital that your find suitable, affordable accommodation that doesn’t eat up your whole budget for the month. To save money and help you get settled in the region, why not look for a flatshare in Sheffield or a spare room with a landlord. It’s a great way to make new friends and the local knowledge of a live in landlord or flatmate can make the settling in process a whole lot easier.
